A blue-blooded Royal adds muscle to Royals’ campaign

The sight of Trinidad and Tobago all-rounder Kevin Cooper clutching his knee after landing awkwardly, while attempting a catch at the boundary during the game against Delhi Daredevils, would have been a cause of worry in the Rajasthan Royals camp. Cooper is yet to consistently produce match-winning performances but provides the balance with his medium-pace, effective in the early games, and his ability to find the boundaries.
Cooper’s injury would have been considered a setback for the Royals, a team thin on superstars and one that has just eight points from nine games. However, the blow of the loss of a key personnel was softened by the arrival of a blue-blooded Royal, a match-winning all-rounder who has worn the Rajasthan jersey from the start of the IPL.
Muscular, tall and blonde, the Australian has a presence. On Monday, as the rest of his teammates were practicing in the nets, Shane Watson, who traversed more than half the globe to land in Jaipur, jogged along the periphery of the Sawai Man Singh Stadium. He knocked a few balls and then plonked himself in the dug out and watched his team mates train. From Wednesday, Rahul Dravid will expect Watson to do much more than just burn a few calories.
Star-studded Delhi will hold the psychological edge in the return leg after their one-run win against Rajasthan at the Ferozeshah Kotla on Sunday. Watson won’t have to be told what is expected of him. If Watson has overcome his jet lag he is likely to take the place of Cooper, who didn’t train on the eve of the game.
