Though children are often overlooked when it comes to whiplash claims resulting from rear vehicle impacts and other collisions, research has shown that they are just as likely to suffer from the condition as adults.
In some cases, children may even be more likely to suffer from a whiplash injury, due to their comparatively small size and the fact that their bodies are still developing. Additionally the spine of a child will generally be weaker than that of an adult, making them vulnerable to spinal and neck injuries in a car accident.
In the case of young children who are perhaps unable to explain any pain or discomfort they feel as a result of the accident, special care should be taken, and a GP consulted if you have concerns as to the wellbeing of your child.
What causes whiplash?
Whiplash commonly occurs as a result of vehicle collisions from behind, even at relatively low speeds. The injury is caused by the sudden forwards and backwards motion of the head and neck when the collision occurs. This violent motion can cause the ligaments in the neck to become stretched or torn.
