Joint-secretary Anurag Thakur said the Australian tour will help future cricketers get used to pitches abroad. “Looking at the way our batsmen found it tough to handle the bounce overseas, the board wanted more India A and U-19 tours. As of now, the U-19 team is scheduled to play the U-19 World Cup in Australia in August and it will be ideal preparation,” Thakur told The Indian Express.
The junior selection committee, headed by Abey Kuruvila, picked a 30-member (probables) squad for the Australia tour on Tuesday at the Wankhede Stadium after Mumbai won the U-19 Cooch Behar Trophy beating Maharashtra.
Thakur said the tour will give the young team an idea of the bounce and movement they would encounter overseas. “In India we don’t have many bouncy tracks and by having such tours we will at least try to start solving the problem. Things will not change overnight but we will try to ensure our batsmen don’t face the same problems in the future,” Thakur added.
Meanwhile, in a recently concluded National Cricket Academy (NCA) committee meeting at BCCI headquarters it was decided that those players picked for different BCCI academies — batting, fast bowling and wicketkeeping — will have to undergo a two-week camp at Dharmsala. With the pitch there helping seamers, it will give youngsters a fair idea of how to handle swing and movement. The India U-19 side is also scheduled to play the Asia Cup in Malaysia next month.
